At C3 Studio, one of our guiding principles is creating home designs that look just as stunning in 25 years as they do today, regardless of whether the style is traditional, transitional, or contemporary. Our goal is to ensure that the spaces we design remain timeless, even as architectural trends evolve. Fortunately, many current trends in residential architectural design align perfectly with this vision, providing us with a solid foundation for creating homes that age gracefully.
Here are six architectural trends we believe are here to stay—and for all the right reasons.
1. Age-in-Place Design
One of the most thoughtful architectural trends we’re seeing is age-in-place design. Homeowners are planning ahead, considering future needs for themselves or their parents as they age. The idea is to create a “forever home,” one that remains comfortable and accessible even as mobility decreases or other age-related challenges arise.
To accommodate these future needs, we often incorporate features such as stacked closets that can later be converted into an elevator, wider hallways and doorways to allow for wheelchair access, zero-threshold showers, and adaptable kitchen layouts. These thoughtful design elements ensure that the home remains functional and welcoming for all stages of life.
2. Suites for Aging Parents
In addition to age-in-place design, many of our clients are opting to include a second primary suite on the first floor or even a guest house with aging parents in mind. Initially, these suites serve as luxurious guest accommodations, offering privacy and comfort for visitors.
However, as parents age, these spaces can become invaluable. When budgets and site constraints allow, adding these suites ensures that elderly parents can enjoy a high quality of life, surrounded by family, rather than being placed in a long-term care facility. It’s a design choice that prioritizes both family connection and practical care, making it one of the most compassionate architectural trends we’ve embraced.

3. Working Pantries
The modern kitchen is more than just a place to cook; it’s the heart of the home. And with that, the demand for working pantries has surged. These rooms are larger than traditional pantries but not as elaborate as full second kitchens. They provide essential storage space and help keep the main kitchen counters free of clutter by housing small appliances out of sight.
If space allows, adding a secondary refrigerator in the working pantry is the cherry on top, making it an indispensable part of the modern home. This trend highlights how architectural trends are evolving to enhance both functionality and aesthetics in the home.

4. Living Porches
Our Principal, Greg, often says that we design back porches as if they’re outdoor living rooms. And he’s absolutely right. These porches are crafted with the depth to protect against the elements, ensuring they can be used year-round as functional living spaces.
Whether it’s a cozy fireplace, an outdoor kitchen, or simply a beautifully designed space, these porches often become the favorite room in the house—one that’s enjoyed in all four seasons. This shift towards incorporating outdoor living spaces as integral parts of the home is one of the most popular architectural trends we’re seeing.
5. Stair Locations in Kitchens and Living Rooms
There’s been a shift in how we think about stair placement in homes. The traditional approach—placing stairs near the front door—made sense in a bygone era when guests were frequently ushered upstairs to public living spaces. Today, however, that layout no longer fits modern living.
Now, families need easy access to stairs from the main living spaces like the kitchen or great room, not just the front entry. We’re designing stairs as beautiful focal points integrated within the living areas where they’re most useful and functional, rather than just as a formal statement piece at the front door. This rethinking of stair placement is a great example of how architectural trends are adapting to meet the needs of modern families.

6. Dog Washes
Once you’ve had a dog wash station, there’s no going back. Even if you regularly take your furry friends to a professional groomer, the convenience of being able to wash off dirt or sand from paws at home is invaluable. Dog washes have become a must-have in mudrooms, laundry rooms, and garages, adding a layer of practicality to home design that pet owners can’t live without. It’s one of those architectural trends that, once experienced, becomes an essential feature in any home.

These are just a few of the architectural trends we’re thrilled to incorporate into our designs. We feel fortunate to be designing homes at a time when these wise trends allow us to create spaces that are not only stylish and functional for today but will remain relevant and beautiful for years to come.
